I applied for an opportunity to get some training on GOLDEN Paints, even though I haven’t painted with acrylic paints for a VERY long time. I do use their wonderful Williamsburg oil paints, which I love, but I have also never used their QoR watercolor paints. Here was an opportunity to catch up on all the new advancements in acrylic painting.

So, I was amazed to receive the invitation to join 20 other artists, from all over the world, for a week of training in New Orleans. We were housed at the Hotel Mazarin in the French quarter, one block from Bourbon Street, near Jackson Square and the Cafe du Monde. The hotel has a lovely courtyard and a first class chef! We had tasty breakfasts and lunches provided, even for me as a vegan.  The food at the Welcome reception was yummy. The biggest surprise was the dinner outings–every night!–to Poydras & Peters American Brasserie, Antoine’s, Kingfish, Curio New Orleans, and aboard the steamboat Natchez during a fun river cruise.

During the day we learned about GOLDEN Fluid Acrylics, OPEN paints, High Flow paints, Heavy Body paints and a huge variety of mediums, pastes, and grits that can be added to change the viscosity or be versatile surfaces for painting and monoprinting. We experimented with the QoR line of vibrant watercolor, with its synthetic alternative to gum Arabic. All was amazingly colorful, adaptable, and exciting, even to an artist like myself who has painted primarily with oil and encaustic paints.
